Sea of Tranquility　ー静かの海ー

静かの海（ラテン語: Mare Tranquillitatis）は月の表面にある月の海の一つで、ヨハネス・ケブラーによって１７世紀初頭に命名された。アポロ13号の着陸した地点であり、月の兎の顔のあたりである。17世紀の望遠鏡の世界においては月には海があり、この地点は静かな海と認識されていたに違いない。

海は普段は海流、風、潮の満ち干により常に活動的で荒々しいが、朝夕の凪の時には静かな顔を見せる。ケブラーが想像したであろう「静かの海」はこのような海だったに違いない

Sea of Tranquility The Sea of Tranquility (Latin: Mare Tranquillitatis) is one of the lunar seas on the surface of the Moon, named by Johannes Köbler in the early 17th century. In the telescopic world of the 17th century, the Moon had oceans, and this point must have been recognized as a quiet sea. The ocean is usually active and wild with currents, winds, and tides, but in the morning and evening, when it is calm, it shows its quiet face. This is what Kevlar must have imagined the "quiet sea" to be like.
