Okinoshima(Chiba prefecture)

Okinoshima Island off the coast of Munakata City in Fukuoka Prefecture is well known, but there is also an Okinoshima Island in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. It is a small island measuring approximately 300 m east to west, 200 m north to south, and 1 km in circumference. It used to be a small island floating offshore, but was connected to the land by uplift due to the Great Kanto Earthquake. On the island is Okinoshima Uga-Daimyojin Shrine, which was built in 1096, apparently in the late Heian period. Although it is possible to walk around the island in a short time, the forests and trees are strangely shaped, perhaps because the island is constantly exposed to the wind in the sea.
